Shaft of the drive of wheels transfer torque from the engine, the transmission and differential to forward wheels (fig. 9.28). In a transmission case power shafts fasten shlitsevy connections with semi-axial gear wheels of differential. Fixing of a shlitsevy tip of the internal hinge of a power shaft in a semi-axial gear wheel is made by a spring lock ring. At installation the lock ring contracts, entering a shaft flute. After the shaft is completely established in a semi-axial gear wheel of differential, the lock ring is unclenched and fixes a shlitsevy tip from axial movement. External hinges of power shafts fasten to naves of the forward wheels established on bearings. Fastening of a shaft to a nave is carried out by a nut.
Power shafts of identical length with the intermediate shaft placed between the transmission and the right power shaft. CV JOINTS are protected by rubber covers which fasten collars and prevent pollution of CV JOINTS water and dirt.
Covers need to be examined periodically on existence of traces of damages, leak of lubricant or cuts.
The damaged covers of CV JOINTS need to be replaced immediately new, otherwise CV JOINTS can be damaged. Replacement of a cover includes operations on removal of power shafts. The most general sign of wear or damage of the CV JOINT, besides lubricant leak, are clicks at the movement in turns, a rumble at acceleration from a condition of the movement on inertia or vibration at high speeds on the highway.

Basic elements and arrangement of shaft on cars with mechanical and automatic transmissions are shown in fig. 9.29, 9.30.

For removal of a shaft execute the following operations.
Lift a forward part of the car, fix on supports, remove forward wheels and mudguards, merge liquid from the transmission.
The screw-driver inserted through a support block a brake disk from a provorachivaniye and turn off a nave nut. This nut is tightened very strongly. At installation it is necessary to use a new nut.
Disconnect draft of the stabilizer, unscrew the spherical hinge, nuts and bolts of fastening of a rotary fist, disconnect a rack of a forward suspension bracket from the spherical hinge.

Take the internal end of a power shaft or an intermediate shaft from the transmission for what implant an assembly shovel between a case of the transmission and the case of the internal CV JOINT (fig. 9.31). Easy blows in an assembly shovel take a power shaft from the transmission. Be attentive not to damage an epiploon of a power shaft. On models with automatic transmissions it is necessary to insert a chisel between a power shaft and a case, then it is easy to knock on it for a detachment of a power shaft from differential (fig. 9.32). Reject a nave outside and disconnect the internal end of a power shaft.
Extend a power shaft from a nave, if necessary using a stripper.
Support the CV JOINT and remove a power shaft from the car.
Removal of an intermediate shaft
Lift a forward part of the car, fix on supports, remove forward wheels and mudguards, merge liquid from the transmission.

PREVENTION
Every time at removal of a power shaft close an opening in a transmission case. At the removed driving and intermediate shaft be careful not to move a vent of semi-axial gear wheels of differential. Insert a wooden stopper or a similar cap for keeping on the place of semi-axial gear wheels of differential.

The screw-driver inserted through a support block a brake disk from a provorachivaniye and turn off a nave nut. This nut is tightened very strongly. At installation it is necessary to use a new nut.
Take the internal end of the right power shaft from an intermediate shaft for what implant an assembly shovel between a support of an intermediate shaft and the case of the internal CV JOINT. Easy blows in an assembly shovel take a power shaft.

Turn out bolts, disconnect an intermediate shaft from the transmission and remove it from the car (fig. 9.33).
For dismantling of an intermediate shaft and replacement of the bearing tools are necessary for a vypressovka, charge this work to specialists of the equipped auto repair shop.

Before installation of an intermediate shaft put new lock rings on a power shaft and in flutes of an intermediate shaft, oil vents gearbox (fig. 9.34).
Insert an intermediate shaft into the transmission, screw bolts of fastening of a support and tighten them the required moment.
Installation of a shaft of the drive of wheels
Lift a shaft, supporting ShURS, and insert it into a nave and the transmission or an intermediate shaft.
Insert a power shaft into a semi-axial gear wheel of differential, easily tapping on it with the hammer through wooden whetstone. Pull a nave outside to be convinced of reliability of fastening of the internal CV JOINT of a power shaft in a semi-axial gear wheel of differential.
Correctly arrange a rotary fist and screw bolts of fastening of a rotary fist to a rack of a forward suspension bracket.
Screw new nuts of a nave.
The screw-driver inserted through a support block a brake disk from a provorachivaniye and tighten a nave nut.

Hammer with the hammer and a chisel a nut fillet into a groove of a power shaft (fig. 9.35).
Connect the stabilizer of cross stability, establish mudguards and wheels, fill the transmission with working liquid and lower the car.

Replacement of a protective cover of a shaft of the drive
Remove a power shaft and fix it in a vice through two wooden whetstones for protection of a surface against damage.

PREVENTION
Before works get the corresponding set for replacement of a cover. The set contains special lubricant on the basis of the Moly paste demanded for filling ШУРСов. Other type of lubricant cannot be used.

Cut fixing collars of a cover and throw out them.
Shift a protective cover with ШУРСа on a power shaft.
The screw-driver remove big lock ring ШУРСа (if is available).
Remove a persistent ring and, shifting, remove the CV JOINT from shliyets of a power shaft.
Remove a protective cover from a power shaft.

From a wheel and differential various covers therefore them it is impossible to mix (fig. 9.36) are used.

Because removal and installation of a power shaft rather laborious works, is recommended to replace at the same time both protective covers of a power shaft even if only one is damaged.
Carefully clear the CV JOINT and vents of a shaft, examine them on existence of wear, damages, hits of dirt and water. Replace any damaged elements new.
Wrap up an adhesive tape of a vent of a power shaft not to damage a surface of a new cover at its installation. Slightly grease the internal diameter of a new cover and put on it a power shaft.
Remove an adhesive tape, slightly cover vents with lubricant and install the CV JOINT and a persistent ring by the conical party directed to a shaft.
Fill the CV JOINT special lubricant on the basis of Moly paste.
Establish an external lock ring.
Place a protective cover in flutes of the case of the CV JOINT and a power shaft.
Establish a collar of fastening of a protective cover so that the tightening spline was closed in the direction, counter to the direction of rotation of a power shaft at the movement of the car.

Tighten a collar flat-nose pliers and bend its shaft (fig. 9.37).
Establish a shaft of the drive of wheels.
